Food Waste Solutions Summit

The Food Waste Solutions Summit is the premier food waste event of the year, bringing together food businesses, funders, solution providers, innovators, policymakers, nonprofits, and more to drive the adoption of solutions to reach our collective goal of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030. My role consists of leading all aspects of the marketing strategy — pre-, post-, and during the event — including amplification toolkits, graphic design and signage planning, crafting session descriptions, overseeing photography and videography, and website management. In addition, conceptualizing and assembling creative and innovative event activations to enhance audience engagement and learning.

Impact Story-Telling

Annual Impact Reports

A key aspect of story-telling is being able to write a compelling narrative that is emotive, visually captivating, and ignites action. I have managed report development processes from inception to release of various impact reports — engaging with internal stakeholders to determine key messages; writing content, conceptualizing the visual brand; overseeing the graphic design production; ensuring buy-in from executive leadership; and developing and implementing a promotion plan that aligns with fundraising goals.

Website & Branding

Food Waste Insights Engine

I played a lead role in the visual brand redesign, website development, and media launch of ReFED’s Insights Engine — an online data and solutions hub with over 37,000 users featuring detailed analyses and up-to-date information on food loss and waste. To date, it has received media coverage of more than 200 articles through leading sources, including The New York TimesThe Washington Post, Bloomberg, Forbes, and Politico

Equity & Capacity Building

Budget Mkononi

One of my proudest achievements was spearheading the development of Budget Mkononi — a web-based agribusiness budgeting tool that assists tens of thousands of inexperienced farmers in Kenya to farm sustainably and profitably — created as a supplementary knowledge tool for the TV show, Don’t Lose the Plot. This project was developed in collaboration with MercyCorps AgriFin Accelerate Program. Digital technology and social media play an important role in engaging rural youth and connecting them to the business and farming skills, information, and financial resources that can help generate a profitable farming enterprise. I led a successful social media campaign that made #BudgetMkononi the top trending Twitter hashtag in Kenya following a 2-hour Twitter campaign launched on 7 June 2017.

Don't Lose the Plot - TV

_DSC5917.width-800.jpg

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the average age of farmers in Africa is about 60, despite the fact that 60 per cent of Africa’s population is under 24 years of age. With an ageing population of farmers, the uptake of agriculture by this demographic is critical in ensuring food security in the years to come. So what can be done to make farming attractive to this cohort?  I served as communications manager and content producer for Don’t Lose the Plot — an award-winning edutainment-based TV show with an audience of four million viewers across East Africa — aimed at encouraging youth to pursue careers in agribusiness. Research showed that roughly 87% of viewers in Kenya and Tanzania indicated that they would take up farming as a business after watching the show, conveying a significant perception change.
